The Danville Area School District uses a balanced approach to teaching reading at the primary level. Reading instruction/interventions are based on the PA Core Standards and are the top priority at DPS and occupy approximately 3 hours of the primary school day. Guided reading is one of the most critical areas of our balanced reading program. Students are taught at their instructional reading level and their progress is measured as they grow. Also, we are continuing our implementation of Orton-Gillingham, which is a multi-sensory approach to teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies.
